Born and raised in Eastern Canada in a small intentional community belonging to L’Arche Internationale of Jean Vanier, Nick was presented with the idea of dedicating one’s life to serving others at a very young age. Inspired by his parents who lived the lives of dedicated karma yogis and by his father’s globetrotting youth, Nick soon started to explore other places, cultures, and opportunities that would allow him to better understand this idea of serving others.
A few nagging metaphysical questions also prompted him to deviate from his formal education after completing an Honors undergraduate degree in Global Studies at the University of Trent. At this point, he spent some time in Mexico and discovered a passion for organic farming. After returning to Canada for another summer of tree-planting, he planned to go to Europe and visit more farms… but fate had another destination for him: India. Two months after his arrival, he found himself listening to an introductory lecture on “What is Yoga” in a Yoga hall in Rishikesh; he had discovered the teachings of Swami Vivekananda. What struck him most was that the resonance of so many of these teachings resembled other experiences, stories, and wisdom he had come across before but had not been able to gather up and apply in a practical way.
Nick began his studies with Agama Yoga and spent the next year traveling around India, exploring ashrams and soaking up the teachings of some of India’s great mystics and saints. The lives of Gandhi, Yogananda, and Ramakrishna, among others, have inspired him to begin a complete inner and outer transformation, a path he continues to follow today.
Nick’s desire to teach and share the wisdom and beauty of this Yoga system lies in the joy that comes from experiencing for himself the changes that are possible and the peace and equanimity that can be found through the practice of Yoga. He completed the Agama Teacher Training Course in March, 2009, and shortly thereafter began teaching on Koh Phangan.
Nick, a Gemini, now spends part of the year in Thailand, another part in Canada, and the rest, wherever the wind blows….
